How SEER and SEER2 Affect Cooling Costs

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures the cooling output of an air conditioner or heat pump per unit of energy consumed during a typical cooling season. Higher ratings mean better efficiency — and lower electricity bills. SEER2 is the updated federal standard as of 2023, using revised testing procedures that better reflect real-world conditions.

Cooling energy usage scales inversely with SEER: a 16 SEER2 unit uses proportionally less electricity than a 10 SEER unit, based on the same system capacity and run hours. Upgrading from a 10 SEER to a 16 SEER2 system can reduce cooling electricity consumption by more than 35%, delivering consistent year-over-year savings.

How AFUE Affects Heating Operating Costs

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) measures what percentage of the fuel consumed by a furnace or boiler is actually converted into usable heat. An 80% AFUE furnace wastes 20% of its fuel through flue losses. A high-efficiency 96% AFUE unit converts nearly all of the fuel into heat delivered to your home.

Because AFUE directly determines how efficiently fuel is converted to heat, your annual heating cost scales inversely with AFUE. Calculating HVAC ROI and Simple Payback

The Simple Payback Period is the most practical way to evaluate an HVAC upgrade investment. It answers one question: how many years will it take for energy savings to cover the additional installation cost? The formula is straightforward — divide the installed upgrade cost by the total annual savings (cooling + heating combined).

For example, if an upgrade costs $6,500 and saves $650 per year in combined energy costs, the payback period is 10 years. Given that modern HVAC equipment typically lasts 15–20 years, a 10-year payback still delivers meaningful positive returns over the full equipment lifespan. Many homeowners find payback periods of 5–12 years on well-chosen high-efficiency upgrades.
